Six travel routes in Nan'ao Subdistrict featuring the "slow city" concept were unveiled during a ceremony awarding the subdistrict the "slow city" plaque at the Lavenna Resort Judiaosha in Nan'ao Subdistrict, Dapeng New Area yesterday.

The six routes, which contain over 20 tourist attractions including a rainbow promenade, coastal greenways, Dongchong Town, and the Xichong dark sky community, showcase Nan'ao's picturesque mountain and sea views. These routes offer a variety of options for food enthusiasts, as well as cycling, hiking, and jogging enthusiasts. Residents can enjoy a leisurely retreat within the city that includes excursions into nature and cultural exploration.

Despite Shenzhen's reputation for rapid development, the subdistrict received international recognition as a "slow city" by Cittaslow International, an organization headquartered in Italy, in June.

The concept of a "slow city" represents a new approach to urban development that emphasizes a deliberate departure from fast-paced environments to create areas free of pollution and noise. It highlights the harmony between humans and nature, promoting a healthy lifestyle for all, as stated by Kong Zhihui, director of the Gaochun International Cittaslow management committee. Gaochun District in Nanjing, the capital city of Jiangsu Province in eastern China, was the first region in China to be awarded the "slow city" title in 2010.

"Shenzhen residents, accustomed to a fast-paced lifestyle, require a place to slow down," said Kong. "Nan'ao, known as the 'oxygen bar' of China, provides an ideal setting for relaxation with a favorable ecological environment characterized by an abundance of mountains and sea."

Taking advantage of its newfound "slow city" title, Nan'ao aims to further boost its cultural and tourism development, inviting more residents and visitors to experience a tranquil retreat from the urban hustle and bustle, according to Liao Qinian, deputy director of the Nan'ao Subdistrict Office. He invited people to savor the unhurried pace of life offered by Nan'ao.

The slow city (Cittaslow) movement, initiated in Italy by Cittaslow International in 1999, has now honored over 300 cities or regions with this title. Nan'ao is the 17th region on the Chinese mainland to receive this recognition.
